A new article published in April 2014 shows that chiropractic care increases pain-killing, inflammation-reducing, stress-relieving chemicals in the bloodstream. The study took 30 volunteers that had blood drawn before, immediately after, and 2 hours after a chiropractic spinal adjustment. Three naturally produced biochemicals increased in the study volunteers. Neurotensin has pain-reducing, anti-psychotic effects. Oxytocin reduces inflammation, improves wound healing, and increases feelings of trust. Cortisol activates anti-stress pathways in the body, and also acts as an anti-inflammatory.
The human body is the best chemical lab on earth. When it is functioning properly, it knows exactly what “happy hormones” to produce, how to counteract stress, and how to heal its own wounds. Most people know that chiropractic care restores motion, reduces pain, and decreases muscle spasms. What they may not know is that chiropractic care improves function of the neurospinal system, which includes the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). A chiropractic adjustment produces positive changes in many functions of the body.
