What we call the “health care” industry is largely focused on “sick care” and crisis-based approaches to life. In his 2002 book, The Wellness Revolution, Economist Paul Zane Pilzer says,
The sickness business is reactive. Despite its enormous size, people become customers only when they are stricken by, and react to, a specific condition or complaint… the wellness business is proactive. People voluntarily become customers – to feel healthier, to reduce the effects of aging, and to avoid becoming customers of the sickness business. Everyone wants to become a customer of this earlier-stage approach to health.
What type of customer do you prefer to be? It is difficult to remain proactive about your health, but it is far tougher to miss a week of work, or a special family event, due to a health crisis. Surround yourself with people who actively share and support your goal of creating a 100-year lifestyle!
